Drug Use Drug use is part of life in the United States. Some people use drugs for medical purposes and some use them to escape from reality or as a way to cope with problems. There are two main types of drugs, medicines and psychoactive drugs. Medicines are used to help the body fight injury and psychoactive drugs are used to cause a change in the users brain activity. Psychoactive drugs are very dangerous. They produce very powerful changes in the body. What a drug does is called its action and unwanted effects are called side effects. The side effects of a psychoactive drug can range from uncomfortable to life threatening. Depressants slow down the heart rate and breathing rate, lower blood pressure, relax muscles, and relieve tension. An example of a depressant would be heroin. Stimulants speed up body activity. And example of a stimulant is cocaine. Hallucinogens alter perception, thought, and mood and have no medical use. An example of a hallucinogen is LSD. Some drugs are made to look like other drugs and then sold on the street as the drug they resemble. These are called look-alike-drugs and can contain any kind of substance. Before a drug abuser can be helped they must first admit that they have a problem. Then they can seek treatment. There are different ways to treat drug abuse one is called detoxification. This program involves gradual but complete withdrawal from the substance. Another treatment method is called therapeutic communities. In this treatment, drug abusers live in a facility and learn to adjust to drug free lives. Hiding from technology is not an easy task. Some people actually need technology or important things, so they can’t Just throw it away. So instead of shutting out technology completely, people should Just set limits for themselves. The limit is up to them; either hardly using technology and Just going outside and enjoying the great outdoors, or cutting back to a certain amount of hours they use it. When setting these limits, take into account the time that you really need it. For instance, for work, checking important e-mails, or even school. People should cut back and use it when they actually need to, instead of using it all of the time when they have nothing better to do. Using technology for entertainment is alright, Just try to cut back and set limits so that it isn’t over used. Just because someone doesn’t check their Facebook every minute, or stare at their phone while their Twitter news feed goes crazy doesn’t leave you out of the loop. And that is the key to not being taken over. A big problem that people get is that they feel that they must constantly check their things so they don’t miss something important. The problem is that they are missing out on what is happening right now and not focusing on the current. They could be driving and get an urge that they’ll miss a party invite, so they must check. Romeo and Juliet Coursework on Act III Scene V Essay In this piece of writing I will explain why Act III Scene V is one of the most important scenes in the play. The scene in question is extremely important in the whole outcome of the play because it is the last time Juliet will see Romeo alive. Also in this scene, Juliet goes against her fathers word for the very first time. Juliets surprise at her mothers sudden arrival is acceptable, as her mother never visits her in her room. The reason for this is that Juliet was brought up by the Nurse, and so has a much closer relationship with her that her mother. What unaccustomd cause procures her hither. Lady Capulet has little experience of comforting children as the nurse has always done it for her. So, when she enters Juliets room she treats her like a small child, by bringing the new of marriage proposal with a slow almost mocking tone in her voice. But now Ill tell thee joyful tidings, girl. Lady Capulet is unintelligent because she interprets Juliets weeping because of the death of Tybalt where it is actually Romeo she weeps for. Evermore weeping for your cousins death?. Shakespeares use of ambiguous language links in with my point in the last paragraph. Lady Capulet thinks Juliet is grieving for Tybalt but it is Romeo instead. In this scene the characters should express this language in a way so that the person whom they are talking to should be unaware of the double meaning. Lady Capulets relationship with Juliet is not at all flowing. In previous scenes Juliet rarely sees her mother apart from at mealtimes and special occasion (i.e. parties). When Juliet does see her mother, conversation is limited to short answers as if both Juliet and Lady Capulet arent trying hard enough to create a better relationship. Juliet has to be a humble daughter so she cant speak out of turn. Pride and dignity have been hammered into her from the day she could talk but in my opinion, this isnt her true self. Before the marriage proposal Lady Capulet had nothing to do with her daughter and left everything down to the nurse but since Paris has stated his wishes, Lady Capulet has been trying to become more involved with Juliet. In the next part of the scene, Lord Capulet enters the room. He also believes that Juliet is weeping for her cousins death. What, still in tears?. At this point he is in a very happy and joyful mood. The reason for this is that he thinks that Lady Capulet has told Juliet the good news and that Juliet has taken it well. His attitude is also very positive because he thinks he has found Juliet a high-class match. His tone changes as soon as he hears from Lady Capulet that Juliet has rejected his proposal. He is now furious with Juliet and starts asking many rhetorical questions like Is she not proud?. The effect of this technique that Shakespeare uses shows us that Lord Capulet is in disbelief about Juliet going against his word. Lady Capulet is frightened because of what Capulet will do when he finds out what Juliet has said. When he enters the room Lady Capulet immediately tells Capulet I would rather the fool were married to her grave! The effect of this line is that Lady Capulet is distancing herself from Juliet and taking her husbands side. The reason for her taking sides with Capulet is that in the time of when the play was written, women had little or no rights and were expected to go along with their husbands wishes even if they did not agree with it. If women disagreed, they could expect a severe beating without consequences from the law intervening. Juliets attitude to her father is almost ignorance but at the very least extremely stubborn. By looking at Shakespeares choice of words for this character, it seems that she wont be changing her mind very easily at all. This is a very important point in the scene because it is the first time that Juliet has gone against her fathers word. The Nurse thinks that Capulets treatment of Juliet is unjustified. She believes that it should be Juliet who chooses who she marries instead of her father. These parts of the scene bring out Juliets lack of maturity and ever present childish behaviour. To express this, I would have Juliet on her knees and begging to her mother. When Lady Capulet tells her be quiet and turns to leave, Juliet would cling onto her mothers legs. The importance of this is that she doesnt know how to react to being virtually kicked out from the family. Only the audience has the full picture in this whole play. In Act III Scene V Juliet repeatedly speaks ambiguously- with one meaning for the person to whom she speaks, and another for herself and the audience. For example, the audience knows that Juliets parents dont know about her marriage to Romeo! Later similarly, the audience knows that the Nurse does not know that Juliet is deceiving her. There is another wonderful invention called the incandescent light bulb. Thomas Edison was a professional inventor. He wanted to see if he could create a better way to light a home that with candles or lamps. And so Edison invented the incandescent light bulb. Edison tried to come out with an invention every ten days. This invention came about in October 1879 (Thomas Edison birthplace Museum). Although people wanted another way to light their homes they did a fine job by using torches and lamps. They had a want for something better, but not a need for a light bulb. The invention of the air conditioning unit is a very popular one here in Phoenix. This again was not a necessity; in fact even today it is not a necessity it is actually a luxury. In 1902, after earning a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University Willis Carrier invented the first air conditioner. He wanted to see if there was a more efficient way of cooling air and making the air cleaner than what the current ventilation systems could do. This was a great invention because before the air conditioner people had good ventilation systems to cool off buildings and this worked somewhat. The air that came in would smell like the vents and the air wasn't really cooled. But with the air conditioning not only could you control the air temperature, but you could also control the humidity. This was good for scientific experiments (MIT's Invention Demention website). Even though the air conditioning was a great invention, it is not a necessity. People can and do live with out air conditioning units in both cars and homes, they may sweat a lot but they do live. Another great invention was that of the car. At the time that the car was invented people got around by horse and carriage, or by foot. It was the day I’d no longer be a civilian. Eight weeks from that day I’d be calling myself a United States Navvy Sailor. In academics, the resume is called a curriculum vitae (or CV) and it is even less fun to write. Unlike a resume which presents your experience and skills within a 1-page format, the curriculum vitae has no page limit. The most prolific professionals I have encountered have CVs that are dozens of pages long and bound as books. Thats highly unusual, of course, but the point is that the CV is a comprehensive list of your experiences, accomplishments, and the products of your work. Your mentor likely has a CV of 20 pages or more, depending on his or her productivity, rank, and experience. Beginning graduate students usually start out with 1 page CVs and work hard to flesh them out into multiple page documents. It can be easy to add pages when you consider what goes into a CV. The CV lists your education, work experience, research background and interests, teaching history, publications, and more. Theres lots of information to work with, but can you include too much information? Is there anything that you should not include on your CV? Dont Include Personal InformationIt was once common for people to include personal information on their CVs. Never include any of the following: Social security numberMarital statusBirthdateAgeHeight, weight, hair color, or other personal attributesNumber of childrenPhoto It is illegal for employers to discriminate against potential employees on the basis of personal characteristics. From the outside, Lester seems to have a perfect salary, and a perfect family who lives in a perfect neighborhood. In reality, things are not what they seem to be. In fact, he is on the verge of getting fired from this job, his wife and only child hate him, and he also hates himself. Slowly a series of crises begin to occur that ensure that eventually the family will be destroyed. He goes to work and comes home only to have dinner with the same music and same people who despise him the most. Not to mention how every dinner ends the same, with personal attacks towards him, only to make him feel worse about himself. The worst part is that he knows he is going to do the same tomorrow. As things seem to escalate more and more it is becoming more obvious that he has reached his mid-life crisis. Especially when he meets Angela, his daughters attractive best friend, he thinks he has finally found a new purpose for living. This is when Burnham has reached a critical point in his life. This film revolves around many ideas and themes. One of these is the value of life. â€Å"I have lost something. Im not exactly sure what it is, but I know I didnt always feel this sedated. But you know what? Its never too late to get it back. †(Cohen, Mendes, 1999) From now on, in the movie, Lester decides to turn his life around. Starting by getting himself out of the depression he is currently in. As the movie goes on, one of the first things you notice while watching the movie is how perfect the houses are aligned and how his whole entire house is furnished with the color gray or light shades of blue. The only things that do seem to have color are either painted with red or blue. In turn the red signifies the things that make the characters happy and the blue signifies the troubles the characters are facing. How does that person interact with others in the movie? Lester’s interaction with others in the movie was the one significant thing that showed his true colors of his character. He seemed to have a positive outlook on gaining relationships, but most characters in the film wanted nothing to do with him. They saw him as an impersonal individual with no care in the world, but to fulfill his own desires. On the other hand, all he wanted was to have a happy relationship with his daughter and wife. However, in return they never showed him an ounce of gratitude. Especially his daughter Jane. From the first time I saw them have dinner with the vase of red flowers and perfect family portrait between them, I knew that Jane had repressed anger towards her father. Particularly when Lester tried to conversate with Jane and she clearly expressed that she could care less. â€Å"Well, what do you expect? You cant all of a sudden be my best friend, just because you had a bad day†¦I mean, hello. Youve barely even spoken to me for months. †(Cohen, Mendes,1999) At this point in the movie it has become pretty obvious that the main character is not only depressed but he also has a passive aggressive personality disorder. And his fourteen year job as a writer for a media magazine has come to an end. In addition, what seems to throw him over the edge is the lack of communication he has with his daughter. Although she wants nothing to do with him, he still longs for her happiness. A Person who is also depressed shows a sign that life is not worth living for them. The character of Lester Burnham didn’t hesitate to express this within the first minute of the movie. He narrates â€Å"My name is Lester Burnham. This is my neighborhood. This is my street. This is my life. Im forty-two years old. In less than a year, Ill be dead†¦Of course, I dont know that yet†¦And in a way, Im dead already. †(Cohen, Mendes, 1999) However what ultimately deteriorates Lesters life is his passive aggressive personality disorder.
